Event Details

This Online Peer Workshop on Humanitarian Negotiation aims to support humanitarian professionals in planning and conducting negotiations in humanitarian contexts. By joining the workshop, you will learn how to analyze the environment in which the negotiation takes place, identify the role and influence of the stakeholders involved, and put in place different strategies to achieve your negotiation objectives. You will also familiarize yourself with some practical tools and methods to support your negotiation process.

The workshop is highly interactive: we invite participants to share their own experiences, discuss, join simulation exercises and learn from each other’s expertise.

This event is organized by the Center of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation, a joint initiative of five humanitarian agencies (ICRC, MSF, UNHCR, WFP and HD Centre).

What will I learn?

We structure the workshop’s program around the content of the CCHN Field Manual on Frontline Humanitarian Negotiation. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned to:

  1. Plan your negotiation strategically
  2. Conduct context analyses and network assessments
  3. Analyze the interests and motives of your counterparts
  4. Set objectives and priorities in your negotiation
  5. Define scenarios and red lines in your negotiation
  6. Evaluate the negotiation process

If you complete the workshop, you will automatically become part of the CCHN Community of Practice. The community includes more than 2,000 field practitioners across the globe who share your frontline negotiation challenges and can support you in your work.

Participants remain connected over time through a private online forum where they can exchange and interact. If you would like to continue learning about frontline negotiations, you will get exclusive access to Specialized Sessions, Trainings of Facilitators, Peer Circle discussions, as well as thematic retreats.

How much time will it take?

What does “Peer Workshop” Mean?

Our workshops are not delivered by lecturers; they are based on the sharing of experiences among peers, with the support of our facilitators and experts. We invite you to discuss your own negotiation experiences to learn from and with each other. The workshops are highly interactive: our facilitators split participants into smaller discussion groups of 5-7 people. You can choose if they want join an Arabic or English speaking discussion group. We encourage you to listen to others and reflect together on the many challenges of frontline negotiations.

Please note we will invite you to switch on your computer’s camera and microphone so that you can actively take part in the discussion.
