In this third webinar from the series of Local Reconciliation and Mediation, we will explore the case study of Northern Ireland. Speakers will highlight the stories of community mediators that negotiate with armed groups, authorities, and communities to improve the safety of individuals under threat, as well as their role in mediating inter-communal disputes. This event is organised in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Meet the guest speakers

Leanne Abernethy, AIMS Mediation Services

During the webinar, Leanne will explore how to intervene on behalf of individuals under threat from armed groups. She will also speak about negotiating with armed groups, authorities, and communities on contentious inter-communal issues, and negotiating with authorities on behalf of individuals and communities.


Anne Molloy, ICRC.

Anne will present the Community-Based Protection Programme in Northern Ireland. She will discuss how it was set up and operated, the project cycle, and the lessons learned for ICRC and third-party organisations.


Conal McFeely, Creggan Enterprises

Conal will speak about mediating between communities and authorities as well as negotiating agreements between groups and authorities. He will explore the challenges of being ‘in the middle’, including the risks to local mediators and their families.
