Event Details

The discussion will bring together experienced humanitarian leaders and practitioners to reflect on how organisations apply humanitarian principles in negotiation and operational decision-making. Drawing on both the research findings and their own experiences, speakers will explore the realities, tensions, and trade-offs involved in translating humanitarian principles into organisational practice.

Discussion themes will include:

  • How humanitarian organisations apply humanitarian principles in negotiation and decision-making.
  • The role of leadership, organisational culture, and governance in supporting principled action.
  • Common incentives and pressures that shape organisational behaviour.
  • The tensions between humanitarian principles and operational realities.
  • How organisations create space for reflection, deliberation, and difficult decisions.
  • Practical examples of principled leadership and organisational approaches that have worked in practice.

This webinar aims to move beyond principles as abstract commitments and explore how they are enacted, challenged, and sustained within humanitarian organisations operating in complex environments.

This webinar is part of the Humanitarian Principles in Negotiation speaker series, a multi-phase inquiry led by the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation (CCHN) exploring how humanitarian principles are understood, negotiated, and operationalised in practice.

This session focuses on the second phase of the research, Embodying Humanitarian Principles: How Humanitarian Organisations Put Principles into Practice, which examines how organisational structures, leadership, governance, donor relationships, and institutional incentives shape principled humanitarian action. Building on interviews with humanitarian leaders, practitioners, donors, and researchers, the study explores what enables organisations to uphold humanitarian principles in practice—and what makes doing so difficult.

Interested in the frontline perspective? Join the first webinar in this speaker series on 18 June 2026, Humanitarian Principles in Negotiation: How Humanitarians Understand, Apply and Negotiate Humanitarian Principles, to hear directly from experienced humanitarian practitioners about how principles are communicated, interpreted, and negotiated in practice.
