Event Details

How do humanitarian actors engage in negotiation with crisis-affected communities? What approaches can build mutual understanding, address power imbalances, and ensure that assistance and protection efforts are shaped by local priorities? What does research tell us about the dynamics, effectiveness, and impact of negotiating with communities in humanitarian settings?

As part of CCHN’s thematic work on Negotiations and Communities, Maura James, research consultant at the CCHN, will present the findings of her recent research on negotiation with communities. This session will unpack key insights and practical lessons from field experiences and research, exploring how humanitarian professionals can more effectively engage with communities as negotiation counterparts.

What to expect:

  • Key findings on the dynamics of negotiating with communities in humanitarian contexts

  • Challenges and opportunities in building trust and aligning priorities

  • Real-world case studies illustrating negotiation with local actors

  • Interactive discussions on promising practices and questions for future exploration

This session will be led by Maura James, research consultant at the CCHN.
