About this Session

How do you explain neutrality to a local authority? What does impartiality sound like when speaking with a community leader? How do you communicate independence to a donor without damaging the relationship?

Humanitarian principles are central to humanitarian negotiation, yet communicating them is rarely straightforward. The same principle can be understood, questioned, or interpreted very differently depending on who you are speaking to.

This interactive learning session invites participants to explore how humanitarian principles are communicated in practice. Drawing on the findings of CCHN’s recent research, Humanitarian Principles in Negotiation: How Humanitarians Understand, Apply and Negotiate Humanitarian Principles, the session combines short research insights, practical simulations, peer exchange, and reflection to help participants examine their own communication styles and experiment with different ways of framing humanitarian principles in negotiation.

Rather than focusing on definitions, the session explores how principles come to life through phrasing, examples, tone, and context.
