Event Details

In the humanitarian field, conversations around protection can be some of the most difficult yet essential discussions to have with different counterparts. Whether addressing the rights of affected populations, advocating for safer practices, or negotiating access, these conversations require careful preparation, adaptability, and a clear focus on humanitarian principles and other normative frameworks.

This webinar features Ms. Michito Kawasaki, a seasoned protection of civilian population professional from the ICRC, who will provide practical guidance on preparing for and navigating challenging protection-related discussions. Drawing on her extensive field experience, Ms. Kawasaki will explore how to keep International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and other legal frameworks in mind while tailoring conversations to the specific interlocutor. She will discuss the importance of framing arguments effectively and ensuring that the needs of the affected population remain central to the dialogue.

Key Topics:

• Preparing for protection-focused conversations: Structuring arguments, integrating normative frameworks whilst keeping the focus on the needs and rights of affected populations.
• Tailoring discussions to different counterparts, including state and non-state actors, while balancing legal frameworks with practical realities.
• Navigating tensions: Applying IHL and other legal standards without overwhelming the conversation or alienating your audience.

The following thematic speaker series has been conceptualised as a natural development to the CCHN’s Protection Negotiations Thematic Group, whilst also being reflective of the gap faced by various humanitarian professionals between normative (legal) standards – linked to international humanitarian law (IHL) – and operational field realities, a dynamic which oftentimes has forced practitioners to be highly pragmatic in their humanitarian engagements. Furthermore, such an initiative seems ever-more relevant in light of the fact that 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, which form the core of IHL itself.
