The online specialised session for humanitarian interpreters aims to support humanitarian interpreters in developing their skills in negotiation and interpretation.

The session is organised in collaboration with Professor Lucía Ruiz Rosendo from the Interpreting Department at the University of Geneva.

⚠️ Please note that the specialised session is intended only for community members who have previously completed an Online Peer Workshop on Humanitarian Negotiation or are completing the Online Peer Workshop for Humanitarian Interpreters (20-21 April 2022). 

The session is highly interactive: we invite participants to share their own experiences, discuss, join simulation exercises and learn from each other’s expertise.

This event is organized by the Center of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation, a joint initiative of five humanitarian agencies (ICRC, MSF, UNHCR, WFP and HD Centre).

What will I learn?

The Specialized Session will focus on the challenges and good practices of working as a humanitarian interpreter during a negotiation in a humanitarian setting. Sessions will focus on: 

  1. The role of the interpreter and how to build trust with the negotiator 
  2. The ethics of interpretation and how to make decisions when interpreting
  3. Interpretation skills and note-taking 
  4. Being part of a negotiation team as an interpreter 

How much time will it take?

This specialised session consists of four sessions in total, delivered over the course of 2 days with the following schedule: 

Day 1 (Friday 29 April): 09:00 AM-11:00 AM and 01:00 PM-3:00 PM (CET)
Day 2 (Tuesday 17 May): 09:00 AM-12:00 PM (CEST) (Simulation)

⚠️ There will be two sessions per day.

You will need to reserve at least one hour per day for assignments and personal preparation work. 

To receive a certificate of participation, you will be required to attend all the sessions. 

Please note we will invite you to switch on your computer’s camera and microphone so that you can actively take part in the discussion.

Selection Criteria

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION REQUIREMENTS? 

  • You should have worked as a humanitarian professional in the field for at least 3 years 
  • You should have experience working as an interpreter in humanitarian settings.
  • You have completed an Online Peer Workshop or you are intending on completing the Online Peer Workshop for Humanitarian Interpreters which will take place on 20-21 April 2022.

The workshop is open to both national and international staff of humanitarian organizations and is entirely free of charge.
