Event Details

To drive the development of the thematic of  ‘Negotiations and Communities’, the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation (CCHN) is set to organise a ‘Speaker Series’ of three online events between September and November 2024, which will be open both to the Centre’s Community of Practice (CoP) as well as the broader public. The aim of this series is to further generate, share, and collect knowledge linked to humanitarian negotiations and communities, whilst also facilitating the creation of a safe and interactive space for humanitarian practitioners and key experts to connect and exchange.

Consequently, the first event in the series is set to focus on Humanitarian Negotiations WITH Communities, in relation to assistance and protection programming, particularly when it comes to engagements with large groups and/or crowds. The soft skills required to do effective de-escalation of tensions/violence will also be addressed.

Recognising that most organisations have policies around communication with communities, accountability to affected populations and commitment to involve the affected communities in the design and execution of their programmes, the event will start with a reflection on why negotiating with communities and the need for de-escalation becomes necessary.
