About the Speakers

Pascal Daudin – Anthropos Deep Security

After starting out as a freelance journalist, Pacal joined the ICRC in 1985, working in more than twenty conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Kuwait, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. He held roles as a Line Manager, Protection Expert, and led institutional reforms.

From 2003 to 2007, Pascal worked as Senior Analyst and Deputy Head of a counter-terrorism unit within the Swiss Ministry of Defence. In 2007, he became Global Safety and Security Director for CARE International, overseeing global operations and policy. He returned to the ICRC in 2011 as Senior Policy Adviser on humanitarian action.

Pascal has also been deeply involved with the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation, established in 2016 by organizations like WFP, UNHCR, HD, MSF, and ICRC, to foster professional exchange and peer learning among frontline humanitarian negotiators.

Maarten Merkelbach – Anthropos Deep Security

Maarten began his humanitarian career with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1991, coordinating operations in conflict-affected regions across the Middle East, Gulf, Central Africa, and South-East Asia. Following a brief mission for the UN in Chad, he became the Director of the Security Management Initiative (SMI) in 2007, focusing on security risk management and legal responsibilities related to duty of care, co-authoring several publications on these topics.

From 2009 to 2015, Maarten held various roles at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), where he expanded his expertise and led courses on peacebuilding, civil-military relations, good governance, and democratization. Since 2015, he has worked as a consultant for governments, multilateral organizations, the UN, and international NGOs.

ANTHROPOS Deep Security was founded by Pascal Daudin and Maarten Merkelbach in 2019. Together they have 60 years of international experience in operational and strategic security and risk management. Excited by what they learned and discovered over years of practice, studies, discussions and reflections, they decided to join forces. ANTHROPOS Deep Security is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
