All participants can attend the Contributor Sessions at the CCHN World Summit.

Surprise, disappointment and frustration are not simply a result of the observations that people make. Rather, these responses reflect the gap between the observations people are making and narratives that are usually unspoken but that shape people’s expectations. As a result, facts and increased access to information rarely resolve conflicts. The conflicts exist in the clash of narratives. What are the practices (methods of listening and inquiring) that will allow negotiating parties to uncover the narratives driving a conflict? How can a person use self-reflective inquiry in advance of any negotiation session to understand the narratives that are shaping their own interests? Understanding your own narratives and being able to listen for and inquire about the narratives of the other will allow a negotiation to be more clearly framed. This doesn’t guarantee resolution but makes it much clearer where the dispute resides. This session will present a narrative theory and then introduce listening, speaking, and inquiring practices to help participants better understand and frame conflicts as a prelude to more effective negotiation outcomes.
