About this Session

Should humanitarian actors ever compromise neutrality to secure access? Can impartiality be maintained when prioritising certain groups over others? How should humanitarians navigate tensions between independence and operational partnerships?

Humanitarian principles are at the heart of humanitarian action, but applying them in practice often involves complex dilemmas, competing priorities, and difficult choices. In real negotiation contexts, principles may be interpreted differently, challenged by operational realities, or placed in tension with other humanitarian objectives.

This interactive learning session invites participants to critically explore some of the most challenging debates surrounding humanitarian principles. Through structured debates and peer exchange, participants will examine different viewpoints, test their arguments, and reflect on how humanitarian principles can be understood and defended in complex operational environments.

Rather than seeking definitive answers, the session creates a space for constructive disagreement and collective learning. By engaging with contrasting perspectives and real humanitarian negotiation dilemmas, participants will strengthen their ability to analyse ethical challenges, articulate their positions, and navigate principled decision-making in practice.
