Event Details

Since February 2022, the CCHN organised different events to support humanitarian frontline workers who are based in Ukraine and conducting various types of face-to-face negotiations at the local level in the framework of protection activities in favour of affected populations, the deployment of humanitarian staff and supplies into besieged areas, engagements with affected and host communities around the provision of goods and services and who are having daily negotiations with de facto authorities who may want to instrumentalise aid for legitimacy. We are also supporting humanitarians who are engaged actively in negotiations around the resettlement of refugees from Ukraine in the neighbouring countries.

This 3-day workshop is particularly targeted to mandators of the negotiation process – in other words, those decision-makers in charge of ensuring that the humanitarian agency’s mandate is respected and that the negotiation outcomes are in line with the organisation’s institutional objectives.

This event is organised by the Center of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation, a joint initiative of four humanitarian agencies (ICRC, MSF, UNHCR and WFP) in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNHCR Moldova.

What will I learn?

We will structure the workshop’s program around the content of the CCHN Field Manual on Frontline Humanitarian Negotiation. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned to…

  • Analyse the environment in which the negotiation takes place;
  • Develop a tactical plan and assemble the right negotiation team;
  • Critically reflect on your role in the negotiation and how your counterpart may perceive you;
  • Identify the actors that influence your counterpart’s behaviour;
  • Understand your counterpart’s position, reasoning and values;
  • Define your own position, your institutional limitations and bottom lines;
  • Use basic techniques to de-escalate a high-tension situation.

You will put your new learning into practice during a simulation exercise at the end of the workshop.

Once you complete this Peer Workshop, you will become a member of the CCHN community and gain access to a wider range of advanced workshops and activities on humanitarian negotiation.

WHAT ARE THE SELECTION REQUIREMENTS?

  • You should have worked as a humanitarian professional in the field for at least 5 years
  • You should have experience working in or with a focus on Ukraine and Moldova.

This 3-day workshop is particularly targeted to mandators of the negotiation process – in other words, those decision-makers in charge of ensuring that the humanitarian agency’s mandate is respected and that the negotiation outcomes are in line with the organisation’s institutional objectives.

The workshop is open to both national and international staff of humanitarian organisations and is entirely free of charge.

WHAT DOES “PEER WORKSHOP” MEAN?

Our workshops are not delivered by lecturers; they are based on the sharing of experiences among peers, with the support of our facilitators and experts. We invite you to discuss your own negotiation experiences to learn from and with each other. The workshops are highly interactive: our facilitators split participants into smaller discussion groups of 5-7 people. We encourage you to listen to others and reflect together on the many challenges of frontline negotiations.
