As part of the CCHN’s Community of Care initiative to build the resilience of humanitarian frontline negotiations, we collaborate with Intisar Foundation. The foundation works to help and empower women affected by war with drama therapy. Its founder, Her Highness Sheikha Intisar al-Sabah, was motivated to help other women in the Middle East following her experience of the invasion of Kuwait. We were honoured when she joined us to discuss the role of women in negotiation, bringing a focus on building resilience and mental strength.

Historically dominated by Western men, the humanitarian world has become much more diverse in the past decades. To better support field practitioners, the Centre of Competence on Humanitarian Negotiation (CCHN) is committed to exploring this diversification and its impact on frontline negotiations.

Located in north-eastern Syria, Deir Ezzor is the second largest Syrian province in terms of area, with a pre-crisis population of 1.7 million. Deir Ezzor is considered wealthy, with diverse agriculture, premium cattle herds, and several oilfields. When the Islamic State group lay siege to the city between 2014 and 2017, its residents were forced to leave their homes. Those who remained had to rely on the WFP for airdrops of food assistance to survive.
